Landing My First Audible Gig: Building the Airplane While Flying It

You might call me optimistic—or just plain crazy. I jokingly tell people I decided to "build and paint an airplane while flying it."

When I decided to kick-start a brand-new chapter of my career, I had to learn the ropes of ACX (Audiobook Creation Exchange) from scratch. In early June, I found an incredible voice coach and started working with her immediately to master rhythm, breath control, and pitch. At the same time, I dove headfirst into ACX University, studied home studio setups, and went deep down the equipment rabbit hole—all while figuring out recording and editing software.

It was daunting, but I reminded myself it was just a massive learning opportunity. In fact, while my home studio equipment was still in transit, I recorded my very first auditions right on my Pixel phone.

I sent out two auditions in one day. Imagine my absolute disbelief (and Cloud 9 elation) when I landed a three-book contract from my second audition ever! The author later told me they had been searching for weeks for the right voice; my naturally brighter, younger vocal tone set me apart.

The catch? I had just two weeks to complete all three books.

Stepping into the shoes (and head) of the protagonist, 12-year-old Sofia, was an absolute joy. I found pieces of myself in her, and as the days and nights blurred together bringing her story to life, she became a real companion. By the time I recorded the final chapter of Book 3, I was genuinely misty-eyed. That bittersweet feeling is how I knew the project worked—and why I consider this my niche for auditions.
