Bridging Strategy, Pedagogy, and Digital Innovation: 11 Years at Columbia University (2011–2022)
Context & Strategic Challenge In 2011, Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies launched a pilot initiative to deliver high-caliber, fully online graduate education. As one of the inaugural five adjunct faculty members selected for this pilot, the challenge was twofold: prove that a complex, high-touch graduate business curriculum could be delivered online without sacrificing academic rigor, and build an engaging student experience from scratch for a diverse array of Master’s programs (including Applied Analytics, Strategic Communications, and Enterprise Risk Management).
Program Design & Curriculum Innovation
- Integrated Course Architecture: Partnered with instructional designers to co-create the digital classroom ecosystem for Introduction to Marketing & Marketing Management, a core requirement for the Advanced Business Certificate and an elective across multiple M.S. tracks.
- Modernized 3-in-1 Framework: Fused traditional marketing fundamentals with modern design thinking principles and product management best practices.
- Continuous Curriculum Refresh: Updated course content, case studies, and practical applications across 33 consecutive semesters to align with rapidly evolving digital, product, and martech landscapes.
- Industry Thought Leadership: Integrated executive perspectives directly into the virtual classroom, sourcing live guest lectures from industry visionaries including Guy Kawasaki, Jon Kolko, Theo Priestley, and executives from Zappos.
Crisis Leadership & Digital Transformation (2020) When the COVID-19 pandemic forced the sudden shutdown of Columbia’s physical campus, the university faced an immediate need to transition residential faculty to virtual instruction. Drawing on nearly a decade of online teaching expertise, spearheaded faculty training workshops and peer mentorship programs to guide traditional professors through digital platform adoption, virtual student engagement techniques, and online pedagogy.
Measurable Impact & Legacy
- Scalable Academic Reach: Educated, mentored, and impacted ~1,000 graduate students across an 11-year tenure, maintaining consistently high student satisfaction and learning outcome standards.
- Institutional Recognition: Awarded the 2020 Exemplary Faculty Award for pivotal leadership in training and onboarding residential faculty during the emergency campus transition to online learning.
- Pioneering E-Learning Blueprint: Established operational and pedagogical frameworks that helped validate online graduate education as a permanent, high-value offering within the School of Professional Studies.
